Miley Cyrus’ new song “Secrets” is an olive branch to her estranged father, Billy Ray Cyrus.
“This song was written as a peace offering for someone I had lost for a time but always loved,” the singer, 32, captioned a snippet of the song’s music video, which she posted on Instagram Friday.
“In my experience, forgiveness and freedom are one and the same.”
The pop star went on to thank Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood, who are featured on the track, “for bringing magic to the music.”
Making sure there was no confusion about the subject of the lyrics, she added, “This song is for my dad.”
In the chorus, Miley sings, “Hero / Can I be your hero? / Call off all your forces / A white flag in the war.”
The portion of the track she shared, however, included the post-chorus, in which she sings, “Oh, I wanna be the one (I wanna be the one) / I wanna be the one (I wanna be the one) / Anywhere you run (Anywhere you run) / You know I’ll follow, whoa / Anywhere you go (Anywhere you go, you know I’ll follow).”
She also included the second verse, which goes, “Love is not a prison / I’m not a guard, no / So even when I’m holding you / I won’t lock you up / You can come and go as you want / Would you like to be lonely? / Your word is all I want (Want).”
Reps for Billy Ray, 64, did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
Miley became estranged from the country star when he and her mom, Tish Cyrus, announced in April 2022 that they were divorcing after almost 30 years of marriage.
“The divorce between her parents [has] put a strain on her relationship with her dad, and it’s been hard to connect with him in the last year,” a source told E! News that October. “She hopes they can eventually work on their relationship.”
The source noted that “Miley has been closer to her mom, Tish, throughout the divorce,” which a second sourced echoed by adding that the singer was very “supportive” of her mother.
The second source also said that Miley and Billy Ray had not “been on the best terms.”
The songstress seemed to confirm the feud when she did not name or thank her dad in her acceptance speech after winning her first Grammy Award for her song “Flowers” last February.
Four months later, she told David Letterman in a June episode of his “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction” series that she was “grateful” to have watched Billy Ray’s journey as a musician.
“He’s almost given me this map. There is a map of what to do and what not to do. And he’s guided me on both,” she explained at the time before acknowledging that her father “had a really rough childhood.”
In May, the “Hannah Montana” star took to her Instagram Story to squash rumors that she was beefing with Tish, 58. At the same time, she wrote of Billy Ray, “My dad and I have had our challenges over the years. Now, in my thirties, family is my priority above all else.”
It seems the father-daughter duo was already on the path to reconciliation at that time, as Miley added, “I’m at peace knowing bridges have been built and time has done a lot of healing. Grateful for the good health and love that flows through my family.”
In recent months, Billy Ray has publicly congratulated Miley on career milestones.
