The Jordan Peele-produced football horror film Him has arrived in theaters. From Universal and Peele’s Monkeypaw, the film was directed by Justin Tipping (Kicks) with a script co-written by Tipping, Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie.
Tyriq Withers’ Cameron Cade first gets excited when he gets recruited to replace Marlon Wayans’ Isaiah White, eight-time champion star quarterback for the San Antonio Saviors. White, whose career is declining, agrees to coach his replacement before he retires, but his methods lean into psychological manipulation, which combined with Cade’s traumatic head injury, doesn’t bode well for the athlete. Julia Fox’s Elsie White pops in here and there to lure Cameron further into the depths of the White compound, where the saviors train. Football themes abound in the sports thriller.
In between intense training sessions and almost equally intense treatments from some questionable needle injections, an ice bath and more, the film contains a stacked soundtrack of needle drops. Some back alluring visuals and borderline ceremonial sacrifice or party scenes while others play during Cade’s practice and strenuous exercises.
