HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The family of a man shot and killed by Huntsville Police in 2023 has filed a federal lawsuit against the city and police department.

The family of Sterling Arnold, who died after he was shot in an on-duty shooting on Sept 14, 2023, has filed a federal lawsuit alleging excessive force and wrongful death against the City of Huntsville, the Huntsville Police Department and two unnamed HPD officers.

At the time of the shooting, Huntsville Police said officers responded to a call at 6:07 p.m. on Monroe Street.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said that once they arrived at the location, HPD officers encountered Arnold, who had a handgun. During the incident, Arnold was shot and later died, according to ALEA.

In the lawsuit filed last week, Arnold’s wife, Tangela Riles-Arnold, said she called 911 on Sept. 12, saying her husband was having a mental health crisis and asked officers to secure a firearm at the house. The complaint said police did not secure the weapon nor transport Arnold for evaluation or mental health intervention.

The lawsuit goes on to say that on Sept. 14, Riles-Arnold contacted police once again when Arnold suffered another mental health crisis. The complaint said officers arrived at the parking lot of the Association of Realtors on Monroe Street and encountered Arnold, which led to the shooting.

HPD said that the Madison County District Attorney’s Office cleared the officers involved in the case on Sept. 22, 2023, after an investigation by the office and ALEA.
