Rescuers have recovered the body of a 2-year-old boy who was separated from his father and swept away by fast-moving floodwaters in Barstow Thursday night.
The boy, identified as Xavier Padilla Aguilera, was found by search and rescue teams 20 hours after his disappearance, a release from the Barstow Police Department stated.
Xavier and his father, Brandon, were in their vehicle when it was quickly overtaken by strong currents flowing across the roadway, swallowing the white sedan and forcefully separating the pair.
Brandon Aguilera was eventually rescued from an island created by the flood. He was taken to Barstow Community Hospital, where he was later released.
A search was launched late Thursday and into Friday, ultimately ending around 2:45 p.m. after Xavier’s body was located in the San Bernardino County Flood Control channel south of the Mojave River.
Nine local agencies participated in the search, with law enforcement teams, emergency responders and volunteers working around the clock in challenging conditions.
“Their dedication and professionalism during this operation exemplify the best of our community’s spirit,” officials said.
The Police Department offered its condolences to the grieving family, and asked the public to provide them with privacy as they “navigate this devastating loss.” Counseling and support services are currently being offered to anyone in need, officials said.
Police and fire officials urged residents to listen to all emergency advisories, monitor weather and flood conditions and exercise “extreme caution” around flooded areas.
