Huntsville Utilities warns customers of a scam: what to watch out for

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Huntsville Utilities just recently adopted a new app and web portal for customers to pay their bills and track their usage, but while people transition into this new method, scammers are trying to take advantage.

“They are trying to get you to click on this link, and they’re trying to obtain your personal account information,” Karen Reeves said.

Reeves is the CEO of the Better Business Bureau of North Alabama.

A scam is going around posing as a Huntsville Utilities employee, sending customers a link to their account and then a login to Office 365.

“Don’t click on the links within there,” Reeves said. “Go outside of your email, go in directly into your account and verify, and then also just pick up the phone and call Huntsville Utilities.

Reeves said scammers are trying to capitalize on the change.

“I do think folks will be more susceptible right now because there have been some changes going on,” said Reeves.

The scam is coming in the form of an email, but Huntsville Utilities said it only contacts customers through the mail, or their app and web portal.

“This is not the normal way that they would be sending you information, maybe about your bill or to update… that’s a red flag right there,” said Reeves.

If you receive this email, Huntsville Utilities said to delete it immediately.

Although if you do click on it, Reeves has some advice.

“You want to go in and change that password,” she said. “Then of course think about what sensitive information is in there. Is it something that you need to maybe go and do an alert on your credit report and maybe even freeze that credit.”

You can also look up any scam on the BBB’s Scam Tracker.
