An innocent driver was killed and two passengers were injured when a road rage incident between two other drivers in Southern California forced their box truck into a brick wall, police said Thursday.
The crash was reported at about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday in the area of 7th Street and Margo Avenue in Long Beach.
When officers arrived, medical personnel were already on scene trying to assist a man trapped inside a 2017 Mitsubishi Fuso box truck, the Long Beach Police Department said in a news release.
The unidentified man, who was the driver of the truck, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers inside the truck, along with the driver of a 2023 Tesla Model 3, were taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.
“The preliminary investigation revealed that the 2023 Tesla Model 3 and a dark-colored Subaru were involved in a road rage incident,” police said.
Witnesses told police that the two vehicles were seen weaving through traffic at unsafe speeds before the Tesla eventually rear-ended the box truck.
“The force of the impact caused the box truck to collide with a brick sound wall, break through the wall, and overturn,” police said.
The box truck was carrying hazardous materials at the time, but none were released, according to investigators.
Police identified the Tesla driver as a 31-year-old resident of San Diego but did not give his name.
The identity of the truck driver was being withheld pending notification of family, police said.
