At U.K. Leader’s Country House, Trump’s State Visit Gets a Little More Political

The first day of President Trump’s state visit to Britain saw him surrounded by royal ceremony and military pageantry, serenaded by a choir and toasted by King Charles III at a lavish banquet.

Everyone, including Mr. Trump, was on their best behavior, with the president hailing what he described as an “unbreakable bond” between Britain and the United States on his historic second state visit, becoming the only American leader to have been granted the honor twice.

The agenda on Thursday is more serious and potentially more risky in political terms, as Prime Minister Keir Starmer of Britain hosts Mr. Trump at Chequers, his official country estate.

British officials are hoping to avoid a political headache for the government in an unscripted news conference with Mr. Trump in the afternoon. During an earlier bilateral meeting between the two leaders, Mr. Starmer was expected to raise subjects that include the war in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The carefully choreographed events of the state visit are being widely broadcast but held behind closed doors and under the protection of thousands of police officers deployed in an intensive security operation, amid protests against Mr. Trump in London and political turbulence on both sides of the Atlantic.
