Prime Video To Explore Moonies Cult
Prime Video UK is to explore the controversial Moonies cult that was famed for its mass weddings. The Amazon streamer has bought The Moonies: Married to the Cult from Hunting the Yorkshire Ripper producer Story Films and All3Media International, which will uncover the darker side of a cult allegedly committed to world peace that was founded in South Korea by the charismatic Reverend Moon. The Moonies: Married to the Cult [working title] features access to insiders, including Moon’s illegitimate son, Sam Park, speaking out for the first time about his experiences of mass weddings, sex ceremonies and not being acknowledged by the man he believes to be his father, whilst a host of other contributors share their experiences, from kidnappings to escapes. Prime Video UK has been going big on true crime docs of late and recently bought five documentaries from Story Films including Hunting the Yorkshire Ripper. Adam Hopkins, Head of Factual at Story Films, said: “Many viewers will remember the extraordinary images of mass weddings – where couples were matched and married – but few know the real story of what happened when a so-called Messiah began building a global empire, pitting believers against their families in dramatic fashion.”
