Mobile gets SPHL hockey team, debuts at new arena in 2027

UPDATE (12:40 p.m.): Hockey is officially returning to the Port City.

Zawyer Sports and Entertainment, the owner and operator of Mobile’s new franchise, made the announcement on Wednesday, Sept. 17.

The team will debut during the 2027-2028 season at the Mobile Arena, following the Southern Professional Hockey League Board of Governors’ approval of the city’s admittance application.

“What’s going to be inside that brand new arena? As you just heard, a brand-new team…hockey! The best is yet to come,” President of the Mobile City Council, CJ Small, said.

The community has a chance to participate in naming the new team. To send in your suggestion, visit the Mobile Pro Hockey website. Deposits for season tickets are being accepted.

“We are excited and proud to bring professional hockey back to Mobile,” Andy Kaufmann, the CEO of Zawyer, said. “We will aim to place a competitive team on the ice while also providing a fun, family-friendly product as we usher in this new era of hockey in the city’s brand-new arena. We will also look forward to playing an active role in the community and will strive to make a positive impact in the region.”

The Oak View Group will be managing the new arena, not set to open until early 2027.

“The new arena is being built to deliver world-class entertainment, and welcoming professionalhockey back is exactly the type of energy we envisioned when undertaking this project,”Peter Luukko, Co-Chair, Oak View Group, said. “OVG is proud to partner with Zawyer Sports andthe City of Mobile to give fans unforgettable moments, both on and off the ice.

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — City of Mobile officials have announced that a Southern Professional Hockey League team will be coming to the city.

This isn’t the first time the city has had a hockey team — the Mobile Mysticks were around for seven seasons between 1995 and 2002.

The announcement took place on Wednesday afternoon during a press conference at the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center.

The Mobile Mysticks were part of the East Coast Hockey League.
