The runway shows during New York Fashion Week offer a glimpse into the creative minds of the designers — and most of those minds take the staging and venues almost as seriously as they do the clothes.
This year, many of the settings for shows and after-parties hearkened back to a time of New York opulence, and others emphasized the city’s grit.
Valentino Beauty re-created Studio 54 — including sequins, cigarette (now candy) girls and even Cher; Jonathan Simkhai took over the Boom event space on top of The Standard Hotel for his after-party; Off-White gave a shout out to all five boroughs through graffiti art across the walls of a high school’s rooftop courts; and Kallmeyer will close out the week by sending models through the Art Deco arches of the Crane Club.
Choosing a venue can be one of the most complex decisions designers make because the pick hinges on budget, location and expected numbers of guests. And, it has to complement the vision designers have for their collections.
