HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Redstone Federal Credit Union will be launching a student-run branch at Mae Jemison High School.

Redstone Federal Credit Union opened its first student-run branch in 2017 as an opportunity for students to gain valuable work experience while also learning about finances.

Additionally, students will learn skills of professionalism, confidentiality, confidence, and communication.

This only adds on to the list of student-run branches at local high schools across North Alabama and Middle Tennessee which can be found below:

  • Hartselle High School
  • Austin High School
  • Decatur High School
  • Bob Jones High School
  • James Clemens High School
  • Scottsboro High School
  • Hazel Green High School
  • Mae Jemison High School
  • Siegel High School (TN)
  • Blackman High School (TN)

Overall, 365 students have participated in the program since 2017. The student-led branches are currently run by 115 students and staff members.

Redstone also designs Affinity Visa® debit cards for high schools or school systems. Eachtime a card is used, Redstone donates cash back to the designated school or schoolsystem.

Redstone Federal Credit Union officials told News 19 that approximately $681,000 has been donated to schools since the first debit card was issued. Additionally, $88,000 has been awarded to student-workers through its scholarship program.

So far, 9 students have been employed by Redstone Federal Credit Union after graduation.

The new location will become the first student-led branch within Huntsville City Schools. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new branch will take place at Mae Jemison High School on Thursday.
