Let’s hope that Helena and Helly R. can share, because Britt Lower, who plays them both on the ambitious sci-fi series “Severance,” just won the Emmy on Sunday for best lead actress in a drama for her work in Season 2.

Lower plays dual roles (or is it one role?) in this surreal Apple TV+ workplace show about employees of a mysterious company, Lumon Industries, who willingly undergo a procedure that separates their at-work consciousness from their leisure-time mind. Lower stars as both Helena, the daughter of Lumen’s chief executive, and Helly R., a rebellious employee of the company’s Macrodata Refinement department.

In this competitive category, Lower beat out actors young and old, including Kathy Bates (“Matlock”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sharon Horgan (“Bad Sisters”).

In her breathless speech, Lower thanked Helly R. (Helena must be livid.) A handwritten joke on the back of her speech notes read, “Let me out.”

Lower’s win was the second of the night for “Severance,” which had already won an award for best supporting actor in a drama (Tramell Tillman). The series was this year’s most nominated drama going into the night, with 27 overall for its second season.

Alexis Soloski has written for The Times since 2006. As a culture reporter, she covers television, theater, movies, podcasts and new media.
