The 2025 Emmy Awards were a night of celebration, A-list interactions, and fashion do’s and don’ts.
On Sunday, stars gathered at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles for the 77th annual Emmys, celebrating the best television of the year. Selena Gomez and Hunter Schafer wowed in red gowns on the Emmys red carpet, and Pedro Pascal popped in a white suit.
Some stars, though, missed the mark with their Emmys fashion, wearing outfits that were too busy or that didn’t seem like a good fit for the awards show.
The different elements of Abby Elliott’s white gown didn’t work together.

“The Bear” star arrived at the Emmys in a floor-length, white dress.
The sheer gown was covered in a delicate floral pattern. The bodice had a corset bodice and puffy sleeves, while the full skirt had lace trim. A black bow belt and black shoes completed the look.
The different elements of the gown would have been pretty on their own, but together, they didn’t feel cohesive. The dress might have worked better if Elliot had ditched the black accessories.
Paul W. Downs took a risk with his tuxedo, but the tie was distracting.

The “Hacks” star and creator chose a Wales Bonner tuxedo, which included a cropped jacket and high-waisted pants. He wore his white shirt unbuttoned with his tie underneath.
While a fashion risk is always appreciated, the fresh take on the tie didn’t quite work. The accessory might have been better if Downs had worn it untied or simply ditched it.
The sheer cutouts on Fiona Dourif’s dress overwhelmed the gown.

Dourif’s black Tom Ford gown had long sleeves and a high neckline. Much of the dress was also made of sheer fabric, which adorned the sides of the skirt and the center of the bodice.
She paired the gown with dramatic makeup and a relaxed updo.
Although the silhouette was pretty, there was just too much sheer fabric. Fewer cutouts and a sleeker hairstyle would’ve made the look feel more fashion-forward.
Parker Posey’s purple look had too many elements.

Parker Posey attended the Emmys in a custom Valentino gown.
The purple dress had a sweetheart neckline, long puffy sleeves, and a form-fitting bodice, which gave way to a tiered skirt with lace detailing. A sheer purple shrug with fuzzy trim sat atop the gown, calling attention to Posey’s green choker.
The shrug and necklace didn’t make sense with the gown, particularly because the faux fur trim contrasted with the lace detailing on the skirt. Posey could have made the ensemble look feminine and high-fashion if she had scaled back on her accessories.
Timothy Simons’ shorts seemed out of place on the red carpet.

The “Nobody Wants This” star wore a custom suit from Brooks Brothers, which consisted of a button-down, a suit jacket, and shorts. The shorts were cuffed on the bottom, showing off Simons’ laced boots and black socks.
The deep-green color was a refreshing menswear choice. However, while shorts aren’t necessarily off-limits at an awards show, they felt out of place at the Emmy Awards. The lack of a tie with a fully buttoned shirt also made Simons’ ensemble look unfinished.
Halsey’s shiny dress could’ve benefited from a bit more tailoring.

Halsey’s long-sleeve Jean Paul Gaultier gown was covered in a shiny, snakeskin-like texture. The neckline plunged to her navel, where the waistline knotted and flowed into ruched fabric.
The dress was pretty, but it looked like it didn’t fit the singer quite right, from the padded shoulders to the overly wide skirt. If the skirt had been more form-fitting, it might have felt more balanced.
Rita Ora’s gown didn’t feel like the right fit for the Emmys.

There was a lot to like about Ora’s Miu Miu dress, which was yellow with a white trim. Its V-neckline dipped low, and a bow adorned the waist before the skirt split into a daring slit.
However, the pale color and cotton-like fabric made the dress look almost beachy, making it feel wrong for the more formal Emmys.
The dress would have been a better fit at a more playful awards show, like the MTV Video Music Awards.
Sarah Paulson’s gown leaned a bit too far into the feathered look.

Paulson’s Marc Jacobs tea-length, off-the-shoulder gown was covered entirely in feathers, which formed a voluminous skirt. Paulson paired the gown with black shoes and a choker.
The feathers were fun, but they were just slightly overwhelming. A bodice with some more structure might have made the dress work better.
Feathers didn’t quite work on Michael Urie’s outfit either.

The “Shrinking” star’s suit was a pretty maroon, and the double-breasted jacket and cropped pants looked great. The pants faded into a darker hue on the hem, revealing his shiny, black shoes.
However, one of the lapels on Urie’s jacket also had a feathered trim, which felt unnecessary. The look would’ve been stronger if he had ditched the feathery addition.
Charlotte Le Bon’s metallic gown might have worked better with different styling.

Le Bon, who starred on season three of “The White Lotus,” wore a silver chainmail dress from Courrèges that showed off her figure.
The dress was hard to miss, with a high neckline and long sleeves, but rather than letting the textured dress speak for itself, Le Bon wore bold accessories as well. Her booties looked like tan socks, and she wore big hoop earrings.
The dress was always going to be bold, but Le Bon could have made more of a statement on the red carpet if she had scaled back on the styling.
Lainey Wilson’s pants overshadowed the rest of her look.

Wilson wore a white halter top that crisscrossed at her waist and flowed into a train. The front was open to reveal a pair of pants, and she completed the bold look with a white cowboy hat.
Unfortunately, the sheer pants, covered in crystal embellishments, were a bit distracting from the overall outfit. The pants and bodice may have felt more cohesive if they were made with a more similar fabric.
