A man who attacked his neighbor with a sword and then barricaded himself inside his home across the street was arrested after an hourslong standoff this week, police say.

The Murrieta Police Department stated that dispatch received a call regarding an assault with a deadly weapon at 11:08 a.m. Thursday at the Madison Park Condominiums. Arriving first responders found a man with laceration wounds to his face and hand that were described as “non-life-threatening.”

“The victim reported an altercation with his neighbor, Michael Keen, who lives directly across from him,” Murrieta police officials said on Facebook. “During the altercation, Keen allegedly swung a sword at his neighbor, striking him across the face and hand.”

Afterwards, the victim ran to his home to seek help and Keen barricaded himself inside his home, blocking off the doors and windows, police said. A perimeter was established as officers began de-escalation attempts; however, they were unsuccessful, and “due to the totality of the circumstances,” they called in the Southwest Cities SWAT Team.

The SWAT officers arrived and engaged in “hours of attempted negotiations” which did not work. Eventually, a plan was made to enter Keen’s apartment, and once the officers did so, they took Keen into custody.

Murrieta police say he is charged with multiple felonies, including assault with a deadly weapon and mayhem.

No injuries to the suspect or officers were reported; the man who was attacked was taken to a hospital for his wounds and received stitches but was released the same day, MPD stated.

A search warrant was served at Keen’s apartment which led to a sword being recovered as evidence.

Individuals with more information on the incident are asked to contact Murrieta Police Department Detective Nate Campbell: 951-461-2677.
