The New York Yankees’ bullpen has had rough outings in back-to-back games against the Detroit Tigers.
On Wednesday night, the Yankees’ bullpen gave up nine earned runs in three innings of work. The bullpen implosion took away any real chance for the Yankees to come back and win the game.
Following the loss, FanSided’s Jake Elman urged the Yankees to fire pitching coach Matt Blake.
“To Blake’s credit, he’s done an overall good job in his six seasons with the Yankees,” wrote Elman. “Talented lefty Nestor Cortes blossomed into an All-Star under Blake, as did former Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Clay Holmes. We can also include Wandy Peralta and Luke Weaver among the more recent success stories. However, the time has come for a change, even as the Yankees’ 3.97 ERA is significantly better than the league-average 4.18 mark entering Sept. 10. Only the Los Angeles Angels (3.9) and Chicago White Sox (3.8) average more walks per nine innings than the Yankees, who are tied with three other teams at 3.6.”
Blake has been with the Yankees since 2020. This season, the Yankees’ team ERA is 4.02 following Tuesday’s loss. The bullpen ERA is 4.54. Neither mark is indicative of a squad that can make a deep run in October.
In the postseason, pitching becomes extremely important, and the Yankees have not been good enough this season. Blake’s contract does not have much left on it, but if the Yankees fail to make any noise in October, the team could look to make a change.
