Significant injuries are never easy to deal with, and the Washington Commanders experienced one on Thursday while playing the Green Bay Packers.

During an extra point attempt, defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. was folded over and appeared to have suffered a rather significant injury. Play had to be paused, and the training staff rushed out to tend to Wise.

Wise looked to be in rough shape, and the training staff called for the cart almost immediately. Following the injury incident, players from the Commanders came out to show their support for Wise.
Wise was able to throw his arm up to let fans and players know that he was doing ok, but having to be carted off the field is never a good sign. The team has yet to state what type of injury Wise suffered, but it was clearly significant enough for him to have to be carted off the field.
Wise has spent the majority of his career with the New England Patriots, where he was drafted in the 2017 NFL Draft. Following his eight seasons with the Patriots, he joined the Commanders in 2025. Wise was brought in on a one-year $5 million contract.
Wise picked up five sacks for the Patriots in 2024, and he was set to be a strong defensive option for the Commanders in 2025. Sadly, the injury he sustained on Thursday looked serious.
The hopeful news is that Wise did not suffer the type of injury that will keep him out for multiple weeks and the remainder of the season. Granted, the scene looked grim, but the Commanders will need to do tests to determine what occurred to the defensive end.
