A 17-year-old girl died a week after being shot in the face at a basketball tournament in the Bronx, the police said on Wednesday.
The girl, whom police identified as Anthonaya Campbell of Hartford, Conn., was attending the tournament in Haffen Park, in Baychester, on Aug. 23 when she was shot, along with several others. Police officers responded to the park shortly after they got a call around 7:30 p.m., alerting them that several people had been shot at Burke and Wickham Avenues.
Emergency medical workers took Ms. Campbell and a man who had been shot in the chest to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, each in critical condition. The man, Jaceil Banks, 32, of the Bronx, was pronounced dead on arrival by the hospital staff.
Ms. Campbell died Aug. 29, a week after she was taken to the hospital, according to the police. The office of the chief medical examiner ruled her death a homicide, the police said, and the investigation is continuing.
Three other victims were taken to hospitals in stable condition, the police said, including a 29-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man, both shot in the back, and a 42-year-old man who had been shot in his arm.
On Aug. 24, the day after the shooting, the police arrested and charged Daeven Reyes, 20; a 17-year-old; and a 16-year-old with murder, attempted murder, gang assault and possession of a criminal weapon. A fourth man, Robert Royal, 25, was charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of a criminal weapon.
They are scheduled to appear in front of a grand jury on Sept. 18, and the Bronx district attorney is seeking additional charges now that Ms. Campbell has died, said a spokesman, Eric Steltzer.
Jennifer Talbot, Ms. Campbell’s mother, said on Thursday that she and her daughter moved back and forth between Connecticut and the Bronx. Ms. Campbell “wasn’t afraid of territory, or people, or anything else,” she said. The day of the shooting, her daughter had been staying at her grandmother’s house, which was right across from Haffen Park.
“‘Everybody’s going to know my name,’” Ms. Talbot, 49, recalled her daughter saying often. “I never knew that it would be something like this.”
