HARTSELLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Hartselle Police Department is providing new details into its investigation into a deadly wreck that happened after a police chase ended in the city.

HPD said that the chase started around 8:30 Saturday night when Priceville Police attempted to stop a suspect, later identified as Archie Hale, for suspicion of DUI. That chase eventually entered Hartselle city limits from I-65 and went west on Highway 36. It ended when the Hale’s vehicle entered the intersection and hit a minivan on the side.

That wreck led to the death of 17-year-old Tristan Holis and the injury of three others in the van. Hale and a passenger in his car were also injured.

HPD said investigators have gathered video from the surrounding area, along with police video, including chase video from Priceville Police.

Hartselle Police Chief Alan McDearmond said after a review of this video, Hale’s vehicle can be seen entering the intersection at a high speed, and that the traffic light was red for his vehicle at the time of the crash.

He said his department is committed to bringing a thorough investigation before the Morgan County District Attorney’s Office. To do so, McDearmond said Hartselle Officials have been in contact with Alabama State Troopers to utilize some specialized equipment and collaborate with their Traffic Homicide Investigators.

“This tragedy has deeply impacted multiple families, as well as first responders and hospital staff who worked tirelessly at the scene and behind the scenes,” the chief said. “In my career, I have investigated crimes of every nature, but this is by far the most egregious example of willful disregard for human life that I have encountered. We are committed to presenting a complete and evidence-based case to the District Attorney’s Office and will pursue justice relentlessly on behalf of the victims and their loved ones.”
