The New England Patriots could be on the verge of getting star cornerback Christian Gonzalez back on the field before Week 2.
According to insider Tom Pelissero, the team waived cornerback D.J. James.
“The Patriots are waiving CB D.J. James today, per his agents Joe DiBenedetto and Andy Simms,” Pelissero wrote on X. “A sixth-round pick by Seattle last year, James spent most of his rookie season with New England and was a training camp star this summer. Now, he’s headed to waivers.”
Teams normally find a way to keep training camp stars on the roster for more than one week unless big news is right around the corner, which is a sign Gonzalez could be returning sooner than anticipated.
The star corner hasn’t seen the field since July 28 due to a hamstring injury that has continued to linger for over a month.
It’s safe to say the Patriots’ secondary missed Gonzalez on the field in Sunday’s loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. Geno Smith threw for 362 yards against New England’s secondary that often looked confused and was second to react more often than not.
Gonzalez will likely take several weeks to work back to his old form, but the Patriots are a much better team with him on the field. If New England wants any chance of being competitive this season, it needs Gonzalez back on the field soon — and ideally on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.
