A California man is facing multiple felony charges after deputies investigating a domestic violence call say they discovered a cache of weapons, including illegal assault rifles, late last month.
An early morning 911 call on Aug. 30 led authorities to the home on the 14800 block of Carmel Street in Fontana, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release Monday.
Arriving deputies immediately called for additional units after finding a woman outside suffering from a severe head injury and learning that her husband was armed with a handgun inside the home.
Authorities used their PA system to order the suspect, identified as Galo Mejia-Reyes, to step out unarmed and surrender.
“After several minutes, Mejia-Reyes complied and was taken into custody without further incident,” the Sheriff’s Department said.
While searching the home, deputies said they found multiple assault-style rifles, pistols, large-capacity magazines, a collapsible baton and a large amount of ammunition.
“Several of the rifles and magazines were found to be illegal and in violation of California law,” the Sheriff’s Department said.
No details were released regarding the condition of Mejia-Reyes’ wife, other than that she did receive medical treatment for her injuries.
Bail for Mejia-Reyes was set at $1 million.
