‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Even More Divine With $194M Global Bow For Biggest-Ever WW Horror Debut; Overseas Rises To $110M – International Box Office Update

MONDAY UPDATE, with actuals…: New Line/Warner Bros’ The Conjuring: Last Rites had some extra divine intervention between Sunday’s estimates and today’s actuals, with the global bow ascending to $194M. This makes the Michael Chaves-directed installment the biggest horror opener of all time worldwide, overtaking the same studios’ It from 2017.

As we reported yesterday (see below), Last Rites had already become the top horror start ever overseas, but when tallying up today, the international box office launch reaches $110M in 66 markets. Domestic also added another $1M, to lift that bow to $84M.

PREVIOUS, SUNDAY: New Line/Warner Bros’ The Conjuring: Last Rites positively possessed the global and international box office this weekend with a $187M worldwide opening, $104M of the total coming from 66 overseas markets.

The Michael Chaves-directed installment has bragging rights to becoming the biggest horror debut of all time internationally (overtaking WB’s own It Chapter 2) and the 2nd biggest ever globally. Warner leads studios for 2025 worldwide ($3.778B), offshore ($2.04B) and domestically ($1.738B).

The Patrick Wilson/Vera Farmiga-starrer further had the biggest debut in the Conjuring Universe in 41 overseas markets including Germany, Netherlands, Italy, UK and all of Latin America.

It was also the top launch for a horror pic ever in 17 markets including Spain, Poland, Norway, Brazil, Colombia and Chile. And, the biggest WB opening weekend ever in India.

In Imax, the global bow was $14.3M including $4.9M from overseas. The worldwide opening is the biggest for the Conjuring franchise as well as the 2nd biggest opening weekend ever for a horror film, behind Alien: Romulus.

Regionally, Last Rites comfortably had the best opening weekend for the Conjuring Universe in Europe, and was the 3rd biggest horror opening weekend ever, in like-for-likes there.

In Latin America, the movie is the biggest horror opening weekend of all time and the 3rd best for WB ever, behind Barbie and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

In Asia, Last Rites had the biggest opening of the Conjuring Universe;  notably dominating box office in Indonesia (83% market share) and Philippines (91% market share).

There are a further 10 markets to release next week, including France and the Middle East. Japan will be the last market to open on October 17.

Here are the Top 5 debuts: Mexico ($13.3M), UK ($8.8M), Brazil ($7.7M), India ($6.7M) and Indonesia ($5.6M). 

In holdover play, Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys 2 is approaching the $200M mark worldwide. On a staggered rollout, the sequel added $5.9M this weekend, taking the offshore running cume to $113.3M across 77 markets, and global to $191M. Australia releases on September 18.

The Top 5 offshore markets to date are as follows: China ($25.1M), UK ($16.8M), France ($11.1M), Spain ($7.8M) and Mexico ($6.1M).

In its sophomore frame, Searchlight/Disney’s The Roses added $5.8M from 44 material overseas markets. This lifts the offshore cume to $20M and worldwide to $32.3M. 

The international drop was 45% while the black comedy was No. 2 in the UK, Netherlands and Portugal. In new openings, it landed No. 2 in Australia and New Zealand.

The strongest holds were in Sweden (-19%), Portugal (-22%), Poland (-28%), UK (-33%), Germany (-37%) and Netherlands (-38%).

Here’s the Top 5 to date: UK ($7.2M), Germany ($1.5M), Netherlands ($1.4M), France ($1.3M) and Australia ($1.1M).

Still to come are Thailand, Korea and Japan.
