Are Buffalo Bills Too Dependent On ‘Superman Effort’ From Josh Allen?

The Buffalo Bills had a comeback for the ages on Sunday Night Football.

A 15-point comeback within the last four-plus minutes of the game gave Buffalo a 41-40 win over the Baltimore Ravens to start the season. As impressive as it was, one analyst believes the Bills may become too dependent on their quarterback and the reigning NFL MVP, Josh Allen.

Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd spoke Monday about Buffalo’s comeback and the superhero-like efforts from Allen. Cowherd compared Allen’s efforts to those of LeBron James during his second stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

“When the Bills win a wild game, my take is usually, ‘Oh, Josh Allen, they put the cape on him,’” Cowherd said. “They have a LeBron/Cavs feel to them. He’s gotta score 42 and have a triple-double to beat the good teams. The Bills have one route to win big games. Josh Allen has to do that, and I think last night was unquestionably his greatest performance.”

Allen finished the game with 394 passing yards, 30 rushing yards and four total touchdowns. Of those passing yards, 251 of them and three of his four touchdowns came in Buffalo’s 22-point fourth quarter.

Cowherd does make a fair point in describing that Buffalo’s lone path to victory this season may go through star performances from Allen. It almost certainly won’t be because of the defense that allowed 432 total yards and 8.6 yards per play on Sunday night.

The Superman performances from Allen last season are what earned him the first MVP award of his career. What the Bills and Allen did on Sunday will not be sustainable, but they won the game and Allen is easily the MVP frontrunner after the first week of the NFL season.
