Alex Bregman Predicted To Leave Red Sox After Season Ends

The Boston Red Sox are trying to punch their ticket to the postseason but will have to turn their attention to Alex Bregman’s contract after the season ends.

Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox in the offseason, but his deal allows him to opt out and hit the open market if he wants. After putting together a resurgent All-Star campaign, he is reportedly a lock to opt out in search of a better deal.

The Red Sox do have money to play with in free agency after trading away Rafael Devers and his contract. Bregman has been a key player for the team, but FanSided’s Chris Landers predicts Bregman will not be back on the Red Sox next year.

“But all those full-throttle jokes exist for a reason – John Henry is rarely willing to spend more than his model tells him he should, and the Bregman market has the potential to get silly once he opts out of his current contract at the end of the year,” wrote Landers. “Just think of all the potential suitors who figure to have money to burn and a potential hole in the infield, from the Yankees to the Tigers to the Cubs to even a wild card like the Angels. Bregman’s been too good this year not to break the bank; will Boston be willing to go that far?”

Bregman is expected to be one of the best players available this offseason. However, that could mean he will ignite a bidding war. His agent, Scott Boras, also has a reputation for negotiating massive contracts for his clients, which could put Bregman out of the team’s spending range.

The Red Sox do have Marcelo Mayer, who could take over at third base, creating a spot for Kristian Campbell at second base when he is ready again.
