Raiders’ Pete Carroll Set to Break NFL Record in Coaching Return

For the first time in over a year, Pete Carroll will return to the sidelines to coach in an NFL regular season game after briefly stepping away from the sport in 2024. And when he takes the field for the Raiders’ Week 1 matchup against the Patriots, Carroll will stake claim to an NFL record in the process that speaks to his longevity as a coach.

Carroll’s coaching resume speaks for itself, experiencing success of the highest degree both at the NFL level with a Super Bowl championship with the Seattle Seahawks in 2014, and at the collegiate level with National Championships with the USC Trojans in both 2003 and 2004.

Very few match the kind of experience and insight that Carroll brings to any team that he coaches. In fact, in terms of life experience, Carroll actually serves as the most experienced head coach in the history of the NFL.

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, Carroll’s return to coaching with the Raiders in Week 1 will make him the oldest head coach to ever take part in an NFL game at 73 years of age.

Despite being the oldest head coach in NFL history, Carroll still brings tenacity and energy of a coach 20 or 30 years younger than he currently is, regularly getting involved in actively coaching his players with physical contact with his team.

Carroll still clearly has the fire necessary to coach at the NFL level despite his advanced age, which is likely why the Raiders decided to bring him in to be the coach of the future in Las Vegas.

It will certainly be interesting to see whether Carroll can quickly implement a winning culture that has not been present in the entirety of the time that the organization has been in Las Vegas.

Notably, the Raiders have reached the postseason just twice in the past two decades, failing to get past the Wild Card round of the playoffs in both of those playoff appearances.

Can Carroll be the difference for a Raiders fanbase starving for someone to come in and save the franchise? Only time will tell.

But a win in Week 1 against the Patriots would certainly be a great step in the right direction for the Raiders and Carroll. So all eyes will be on Carroll’s Raiders in his record-breaking return to the NFL on Sunday.
