Even though Saturday Night Live went against the directions provided by the comedy trio Please Don’t Destroy’s trade name, members Ben Marshall, Martin Herlihy and John Higgins indicated this weekend they would not be parting ways altogether but seemingly taking a hiatus.
As the group took to the stage amid riotous applause during a tour stop in Portland Friday night, a brief fan-captured video clip showed the comedians poking fun at the recent hubbub over the major cast shakeups ahead of SNL Season 51.
“Anything go on this week?” Marshall, who has been promoted to a cast member for the year, began. Higgins, who is leaving SNL, added: “Anything in the news?”
When an audience member shouted something incoherent, Higgins noted, “It’s PDD forever, baby!”
Marshall concurred, saying: “What he said.”
Please Don’t Destroy kicked off its comedy tour in late July of this year, and the September show featured the troupe’s first public reunion since news broke of its, ahem, destruction. Amid four new cast additions, Marshall will also join as a player, while Herlihy will feature in the writers’ room. Higgins will depart entirely to focus on his acting career. Future scheduled stops include venues in New Jersey and Maryland, before the tour wraps in a week.
In some ways, the writing was on the wall regarding the conclusion of the group’s tenure on the storied, Lorne Michaels-helmed late-night institution. Joining in 2021, the trio had significantly reduced its output season-to-season, with several sketches later being cut for time or posted online (the latter in the tradition of predecessor The Lonely Island and its digital shorts).
As Deadline reported earlier, it’s understood that the troupe will remain together, but focus its efforts on developing other projects and will no longer make videos for the NBC series.
