Netflix has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Last Samurai Standing, an upcoming six-episode historical drama and action epic adapted from Shōgo Imamura’s Ikusagami novels.
The teaser plunges audiences into a Meiji-era battle royale: at dusk, 292 warriors descend on Kyoto’s Tenryūji Temple, each carrying a single wooden tag to seize or defend in a deadly dash toward Tokyo. Filmed over several days with more than 1,000 cast and crew, the temple melee showcases producer-star Junichi Okada and director Michihito Fujii’s daring fusion of cutting-edge CGI and practical effects, promising some of the most visceral action sequences ever seen on Japanese television.
Alongside Okada’s lead role and action-planning duties, the latest announcement also unveils a wave of new cast members. Gaku Hamada joins as Superintendent General Toshiyoshi Kawaji, Taiiku Okazaki portrays swordsman Jinroku Keage, Arata Iura appears as Home Minister Toshimichi Okubo, Tetsushi Tanaka plays Bureau of Communications chief Hisoka Maejima, and Ayumu Nakajima rounds out the roster as Okubo’s secretary Shinpei Nagase. They expand an already star-studded ensemble, including Yūmia Fujisaka, Kaya Kiyohara, Masahiro Higashide and Kazunari Ninomiya — into a taut saga of honor, betrayal and survival.
The Last Samurai Standing is set to premiere on November 13 with 6 episodes, exclusively available on Netflix. It will also be available in a special viewing during the 30th Busan International Film Festival in South Korea later this month.
