A man was killed by the police early Sunday after he walked into the 73rd Precinct station house in Brooklyn and slashed an officer in the face with a 14-inch butcher knife, the authorities said.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was treated at a local hospital. “She is going to recover and is in good spirits,” Mayor Eric Adams said on X after he visited her on Sunday morning. A video shared on social media by the police officers’ union on Sunday afternoon showed the officer being wheeled out of the hospital as police officials applauded.

The man, who has also not been identified, entered the front of the station house on East New York Avenue in the Brownsville neighborhood at 5:24 a.m. and tried to open a locked door in the vestibule, according to the police.

Four minutes later, he entered the building through a back door, which was marked as for Police Department use only, and was approached by the officer, who told him to enter through the front if he needed help, the police said.

The man took out a butcher knife and slashed the officer in the face. She fought him off, and he ran out of the station house when another officer deployed a stun gun that had no effect, the police said.

A number of officers ran after the man for several blocks and told him to to drop his weapon, but he didn’t comply, the police said. Once they reached Saratoga Avenue between Eastern Parkway and Park Place, the man lunged with his weapon at another officer, and officers fired their guns, striking him numerous times, officials said. The shooting was captured on body camera footage and surveillance video in the area.

The man was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

At a news conference Sunday morning, Philip Rivera, chief of patrol for the department, said the encounter reflected the risks that officers confront in the city.

“Every day our officers put on these uniforms, they encounter dangerous situations out in the street,” Chief Rivera said. “It’s another kind of danger when someone comes directly into a precinct armed with a knife and attacks our officers.”
