Justin Fields posted a strong performance for the New York Jets on Sunday against his old team, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He threw for 218 yards with one passing touchdown while adding 48 rushing yards with two rushing touchdowns.
It was a more complete performance for him in one week than he posted in any start he made last season for the Steelers. His teammates, Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson, praised his performance despite the 34-32 loss in Week 1.
“That boy is a dawg,” Wilson told SNY. “That’s the man I know.”
Hall echoed his sentiments.
“He commanded the offense, controlled the offense,” Hall also told SNY. “He was a great leader for us today”
ESPN’s Rich Cimini was quick to praise Fields as well in his postgame takeaways on the Jets’ performance.
“If he (Fields) keeps it up, and if the Jets can run it as effectively as they did on Sunday (182 yards), they will win more games than people expect.,” wrote Cimini.
It was also the first time the Jets scored 25+ points in any matchup against the Steelers in the history of their matchups, per ESPN research.
The Jets are going to rely on Fields a lot this season in order to take a step forward in the standings. Ideally, Glenn would probably like to see Fields deliver more in the passing game, but he’s now showcased the Jets are a run-first team. It’s still a step forward for him from previous years outside the organization as he frequently connected with his old teammate in Wilson.
Week 1 was a building block for Fields and the Jets offense, and Glenn knows Fields is the guy to help him reshape a franchise that hasn’t been in the playoffs since 2010.
