President Donald Trump‘s approval rating has flipped with white voters.

According to polling by The Economist/You Gov, the proportion of white voters who support Trump has increased by 8 percentage points after it previously declined. The polling rebound means Trump’s approval rating among the demographic is now positive.

Why It Matters

White people are a key group in Trump’s base. More than 8 in 10 Trump voters in the 2024 election were white, according to the Associated Press. Pew Research Center found that 55 percent of white voters voted for Trump in 2024 and 2020 and that 54 percent of white people opted for him in 2016.

Maintaining the base will be important for the Republican Party more broadly when voters head to the polls for the midterms in November 2026.

What To Know

According to the polling, Trump’s net approval rating among white people has increased from an all-time low of -2 percentage points in July, when 47 percent said they approved of him and 49 percent said they disapproved, to +6 percentage points in September. In this latest poll, 51 percent of white people said they approved of Trump and 45 percent said they disapproved of him.

Trump’s approval rating has changed among different demographics, too. Support from rural voters has dipped, new polling shows. Meanwhile, other national polls have suggested some people harbor negative views about the president.

According to recent YouGov polling for U.K. newspaper The Times, the proportion of people who disapprove of Trump’s job performance has increased from 52 percent in April to 57 percent in July.

Last month, a Quinnipiac poll showed that the president has a 37 percent approval rating versus a 55 percent disapproval rating, a new low for these pollsters.

What People Are Saying

William F. Hall, adjunct professor of political science and business at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, told Newsweek that the shift could “be reflective of factors that may not necessarily be readily evident, at least at first glance.

“This current shift in approval rating for President Trump, from negative to positive, particularly among the demographic group, white voters, could also be reflective of a potentially far more troubling trend, increasingly, toward greater divisiveness and tensions among different demographic groups within our population, based on race, ethnicity and an expansion and deepening of racially motivated polarization, being experienced among our population, in general.”

What Happens Next

Trump’s popularity among different demographics is likely to fluctuate as his presidency continues.

It will be tested in earnest in the November 2026 midterm elections.
