Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is entering a pivotal 2025 NFL campaign in which he may have to prove that he is actually a franchise player in the desert moving forward, but things could be getting off to a rocky start.

With the Cardinals getting set to face the New Orleans Saints in their season opener on Sunday, Murray has actually been added to the injury report with an illness. He will play, but this is certainly something to monitor.

Murray started all 17 games last year, marking the first time since 2020 that the former No. 1 overall pick played a full campaign. He threw for 3,851 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 68.8 percent of his passes and posting a 93.5 passer rating. Additionally, he rushed for 572 yards and five scores.

There was a time when Murray appeared to be one of the top up and coming quarterbacks in the NFL, as he made back-to-back Pro Bowl appearances in 2020 and 2021, his second and third professional seasons.

However, many have soured on the University of Oklahoma product since then, which ironically came not long after he signed his five-year, $230.5 million contract extension with Arizona in July 2022.

Murray had a rather rough year in his first season after inking the new pact, appearing in just 11 contests that year while totaling 14 passing touchdowns and seven picks. He tore his ACL during the back half of the season, resulting in a long recovery period.

The 28-year-old returned to play in eight games in 2023, putting forth a rather uneven performance. He definitely showed encouraging signs in 2024, but the jury is still largely out on Murray heading into 2025.

To be fair, it’s not like Murray has had a ton of help the past several seasons, but the Cardinals are viewed by some as a sleeper team in the NFC this fall.

It’s time for Murray to cement himself as Arizona’s top guy moving forward.
