Summary

  • Sony Pictures released the trailer for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, premiering January 16, 2026
  • The film focuses on a new threat: a cult of terrifying survivors
  • Cillian Murphy returns as Jim for a cameo, setting up a larger role

The horror saga that redefined the zombie genre is back. Sony Pictures has released the first official trailer for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the highly anticipated sequel to this summer’s hit 28 Years Later. The film, directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman) and with a script from original writer Alex Garland, promises to take the franchise in a terrifying new direction, with a theatrical release set for January 16, 2026.

The trailer and official synopsis confirm that the infected are no longer the only threat. It reads, “Expanding upon the world created by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland in 28 Years Later but turning that world on its head – Nia DaCosta directs 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. In a continuation of the epic story, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) finds himself in a shocking new relationship – with consequences that could change the world as they know it – and Spike’s (Alfie Williams) encounter with Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) becomes a nightmare he can’t escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival – the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.”

Returning to the fray is Dr. Kelson, played by Ralph Fiennes, who finds himself in a shocking new relationship that could alter the fate of the world. The footage hints at a chilling exploration of what happens to humanity after decades of fighting for survival. The trailer also reveals a brief but impactful cameo from Cillian Murphy, who reprises his role as Jim from the original 28 Days Later for the first time in over two decades. His return has set the stage for an even larger role in the planned third film, making The Bone Temple a crucial bridge in the new trilogy. Murphy is the executive producer on this film.
