The Toronto Maple Leafs have been linked quite heavily as a potential future suitor for Edmonton Oilers’ superstar center Connor McDavid.
With McDavid entering the final season of his contract with the Oilers during the upcoming 2025-26 campaign, his future has become a major talking point. Sticking around with Edmonton is a clear possibility, but other teams would love to have a chance to land him as a free agent.
Should he actually hit the open free agency market, the Maple Leafs could be a team to watch.

With that being said, a new update has come out regarding Toronto’s potential standing as a suitor for McDavid if he becomes a free agent.
NHL insider James Mirtle of The Athletic has cast doubt on the Maple Leafs as a possible McDavid destination. He doesn’t think that Toronto has the luxury of waiting around and hoping to land the 28-year-old star.
“This core is older. There’s not a lot coming. You’ve heard this before. But what it means is the Leafs aren’t in a great position to wait for anyone, even McDavid,” Mirtle wrote.
That being said, if the opportunity did arise for the Maple Leafs to sign McDavid, would they really pass that up? Probably not, but they can’t afford to stand pat and do nothing with the hope of having a chance to add him.
During the 2024-25 NHL season with the Oilers, McDavid played in 67 games. He scored 26 goals to go along with 74 assists to total 100 points.

McDavid is one of the best players in hockey. Every team in the league would love to have him on their side. Toronto is included on that list.
Expect to continue hearing the Maple Leafs connected to McDavid as time moves forward. Mirtle is right that Toronto can’t afford to wait around on him to become available, but there is no doubt that the Maple Leafs would make sense as a possible suitor if the situation is right.
