Gaza City residents urged to evacuate to ‘humanitarian zone’
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a notice to Palestinians living in Gaza City to leave and head towards a “humanitarian zone” in Al-Mawasi in Khan Younis, to the south.
“Take this opportunity to move early to the (Al-Mawasi) humanitarian zone and join the thousands of people who have already gone there,” said IDF spokesman Avichay Adraee.
The IDF said there were field hospitals, water pipelines and desalination facilities, food and medicine at the humanitarian zone.
The announcement comes as Israel continues its offensive to capture the Palestinian territory’s largest city by pre-war population after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military to capture it.
Netanyahu says the city is a Hamas stronghold and capturing it is necessary to defeat the Palestinian Islamist militants who led the October 7, 2023, attacks in Israel that sparked the ongoing war.
Before the war, around a million people lived in the city. The current offensive threatens to displace hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.
