A Los Angeles dad who took matters into his own hands by directing his own DIY newborn photoshoot has left the internet in hysterics.
Meredith Bull (@meredithbullofficial) found her husband Daniel after he’d set up a “studio” for their newborn son, Calvin, who was placed at the center of it all, surrounded by plush dolphins, fish and even a toy fishing pole.
Meredith’s caption read: “I said I wanted an ocean theme, I think he nailed it.”
The couple’s journey to this unlikely photoshoot started with sticker shock. “After my first was born, I researched newborn shoots here in Los Angeles and they started at, like, $750,” Meredith told Newsweek.
“[Daniel] was definitely not going to go for that, so he staged a DIY shoot then. It was car-themed and he found a basket, a blanket, some diecast cars and a random octopus. I filmed him from behind because I thought it was so cute. I never really shared that moment but it’s a fond memory.”
By the time Ruven, their second son was born, professional shoots had only become pricier. Meredith did yet more research and got a quote for $1,500.
As a musician, that was more than she’d ever spent on professional photos for herself.
“One day a couple weeks after Ruven was born, I walked into our room and saw what you see in the video. I knew I needed to capture it again because there’s just something unexpected about seeing a dad—a super tattooed one at that—staging a wholesome newborn photoshoot,” she said.
The mom of two helped refine the concept and suggested Daniel stick to a single theme. “I went outside and grabbed my older son’s ‘fishing pole’ and I think that’s what really made the photos,” she said.
Meredith posted the behind the scenes in a reel on Instagram, which has clocked up 8.6 million views and over 335,000 likes. Thousands of Instagram users commented on the reel, causing hysterics on the platform.
“As a baby photographer these are hilarious. Good enough to later laugh about the whole thing. I hope he booked the real Deal though,” one user wrote.
“The blue sheet is giving ocean,” another laughed.
A third commenter said, “I can see his vision.”
As for Meredith’s reaction, she was impressed. “My husband is an amazing father and provider and I’m glad he has a good sense of humor about it all,” she said. “And full disclosure, he actually has a great eye for photos, I just don’t think newborn portrait photography is his niche.”
