Vanderbilt opened its season with a solid performance in its tune-up game against Charleston Southern, winning 45-3. Star quarterback Diego Pavia had an excellent outing, connecting on 20 of 25 passes for 275 yards with three touchdowns. Running back Sedrick Alexander had 12 carries for 83 yards, while Eli Stowers caught four passes for 86 yards in the dominant victory.
Virginia Tech, meanwhile, put up a good fight against another SEC foe, South Carolina, in its season opener, but ultimately fell 24-11. Quarterback Kyron Drones connected on just 15 of 35 passes for 221 yards and two interceptions, while Donovan Greene caught three balls for 94 yards. Running back Marcellous Hawkins had 15 carries for 58 yards.
