The lowest-ranked ‘nation’ in world football is eyeing its first points in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup on Saturday when San Marino hosts Bosnia & Herzegovina. Top till take on bottom in UEFA qualifying Group H, with San Marino yet to earn a point after four games while the Dragons aim to extend a three-point lead at the summit.
La Serenissima have long been a laughing stock of international football, long famed for not winning a game in 20 years. Except that image is improving for San Marino after they clinched not one but two UEFA Nations League victories over Liechtenstein last year.
It’s just a shame the microstate hasn’t been able to produce the same form against Bosnia & Herzegovina, who has beaten the Italian cousins in each of their three meetings to date. And the most recent of those was only in June of this year, albeit a narrow 1-0 win to help keep Sergej Barbarez’s side at the top of Group H.
San Marino will hope to give a better account of itself on home soil, though even a win is unlikely to be enough to lift the team off the base of the standings.
