Mexico is chasing a third straight win over Japan when the two teams meet on U.S. soil this Saturday.

Oakland will host Saturday’s friendly showdown between Mexico and Japan, where El Tri are targeting a third straight victory in this particular rivalry. The clash at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum will be the first time these teams have thrown down since 2020, with Mexico targeting a third consecutive win over the Samurai Blue.

It hasn’t been a seamless stay in the Bay Area for Mexico after the team confirmed they had some of their equipment stolen upon touching down on the West Coast. ESPN reported that a vehicle containing training equipment was broken into and ransacked when left unattended.

Reigning Gold Cup champion Mexico will look to disregard that disruption in the hopes of building some momentum during this international break. Javier Aguirre’s side defeated the United States in July to retain the Gold Cup crown, while Japan did the same in the EAFF E-1 Championship earlier this summer.

San Diego winger Hirving Lozano is back in the international fold after a period out of action, while center-back Juanjo Purata could make his international debut. Japan head coach Hajime Moriyasu has assembled a squad dotted with European-based talent, meanwhile, including Premier League champion and captain Wataru Endo.
