Jackson State (1–0) kicked off the season with a strong 28–14 win over Hampton. Running back Ahmad Miller was explosive, rushing for 172 yards and two touchdowns on just ten carries. Quarterback Jacobian Morgan completed 14 of 29 passes for 127 yards, while short touchdown runs by Donerio Davenport and Emari Matthews in the first half gave the Tigers early momentum.
Southern Miss (0–1) fell 34–17 to Mississippi State in Week 1. Quarterback Braylon Braxton accounted for most of the offense, throwing for 199 yards with two touchdowns (and one interception), and adding 58 yards on the ground. Leading receiver Jeffery Pittman contributed 52 yards through the air, though the team’s ground game struggled overall.
