Two people were shot — one fatally — after an altercation broke out in the drive-thru of a McDonald’s in East Hollywood overnight, and it’s believed the suspect called the police on himself before he was arrested.
Details surrounding the shooting were initially scarce; however, it was verified that gunfire erupted at the fast food spot on the corner of Western Avenue and Romaine Street around 3:30 a.m. Saturday.
According to witnesses, an argument started in the drive-thru lane when one car hit another. As the fight broke out, one of the people involved pulled out a gun and opened fire, striking a man in the chest and a woman in the leg, preliminary information indicates.
A witness at the scene told KTLA that he tried to help the man who was shot, but it was too late.
“What I heard when I was across the street were two shots…and I heard the lady crying ‘I got shot! I got shot!’” he said. “When I came across the street to check, she was shot in the thigh, but she kept asking [for someone] to help her husband.”
“When I went to check his pulse, he had already passed,” he continued.
That man’s statement was not verified by law enforcement, who told KTLA that the man who was shot was pronounced dead at a hospital; video footage does show him being loaded into an ambulance and taken from the scene.
The names of the man and woman who were shot are not known; however, a family member of the people who were shot told KTLA’s Jennifer McGraw that the woman — who is his sister — and the man were due to be married soon.
“It’s definitely going to take a toll on a lot of us, including myself, because he was a great guy…we partied, we had fun, we took a lot of cool family trips together,” said Tony Molina. “And now it’s like, everything was taken in a flash.”
It was reported that the man who opened fire was the one to call police and waited at the scene. Video footage obtained by KTLA shows him being detained by officers in the parking lot.
He has also not been identified. Witnesses at the scene say he told officers he was acting in self-defense, but authorities did not confirm whether that was the case.
Police were still at the scene at 7 a.m. investigating the incident. No further information was immediately available.
