Three people have been arrested for allegedly stealing ATMs in Long Beach in July.
The theft attempts, which took place on on July 14 at 6580 Paramount Blvd. and July 15 at 6605 Long Beach Blvd., involved the thieves using a stolen SUV and metal chain to try to dislodge standalone machines from in front of businesses, the Long Beach Police Department said in a news release.
It’s a method that’s been used elsewhere in Southern California.
In addition, the July 15 incident involved an alleged hit-and-run, as they “struck a female pedestrian with their vehicle and fled the scene without stopping,” causing “life-threatening injuries,” police said.
Police identified the culprits as:
- Luis Torres, a 36-year-old resident of Lynwood
- Richard Moran, a 29-year-old person experiencing homelessness in Compton
- Clarence Hardiman, a 32-year-old resident of Compton
The three face charges of grand theft, felony vandalism, possession of burglary tools and criminal conspiracy. Additionally, Torres and Hardiman face charges of vehicle theft with prior convictions, and Hardiman is being charged with felony hit-and-run causing injury.
All three were arrested on Aug. 21 and are being held without bail.
“During the arrest operation, detectives recovered evidence, including a large chain consistent with the group’s method of stealing ATMs,” police said. “Detectives also recovered a stolen car and a stolen motorcycle.”
