Police are investigating a burglary in Manhattan Beach after thieves broke into a jewelry store and stole gold and other valuables — a hit that the owners said the franchise has never seen in its century of doing business.

Police said that between the hours of 12 a.m. and 4 a.m. on Sept. 1, an unknown number of suspects broke into South Bay Gold’s Manhattan Beach location by carving a hole in the roof.

As of Friday morning, the Manhattan Beach Police Department said investigators were still working to determine the total amount of jewelry and gold the suspects stole from the shop, located at 2413 N. Sepulveda Blvd. “The total loss is still being assessed,” police told KTLA.

Workers from a business next door to South Bay Gold later discovered the hole in the roof and alerted police and the business owners.

One South Bay Gold owner told KTLA on Friday that she is still quite shaken up from the break-in, and that she has yet to visit the shop because of it. She said South Bay Gold also has locations in Redondo Beach and Torrance, noting that the Redondo Beach location has been around for 102 years.

In all those years, she said, this is the first time one of their businesses has been hit like this.

Police are asking for help from local businesses and residents in the area.

Anyone who may have security cameras or surveillance systems that were active during the specified time frame is asked to review their footage for any suspicious activity, including unfamiliar vehicles or individuals. If anything of interest stands out, police ask that you please contact Detective Connor Hedde at 310-502-5121.

Nidia Becerra and Annie Rose Ramos contributed to this report.
