EXCLUSIVE: Before his film Nuremberg has its North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Sunday, James Vanderbilt has sold his next original idea to Paramount Pictures in a splashy preemptive deal. Vanderbilt is writing to direct the untitled film.

The logline is being kept under wraps, but sources describe it as an original big-budget techno thriller about how the world’s superpowers react when an unidentified craft crash lands in the Arctic.

Tripp Vinson will produce under his Vinson Films banner alongside Vanderbilt, William Sherak, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment.

Vanderbilt  wrote, directed and produced Nuremberg, which Sony Pictures Classics is launching at TIFF and into Oscar season this fall. The film has a strong cast headed by Russell Crowe, Rami Malik and Michael Shannon, and Vanderbilt adapted it from the Jack El-Hai book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist. Vanderbilt produced with Richard Saperstein, Bradley J. Fischer, William Sherak and Walden Media’s Frank Smith, Benjamin Tappan and Cherilyn Hawrysh, along with István Major of Filmsquad and George Freeman.

Vanderbilt wrote and co-produced this year’s Fountain of Youth for Skydance and Apple, which starred John Krasinski and Natalie Portman and was directed by Guy Ritchie. As a producer, he is in post on Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, the sequel to the 2019 breakout hit, with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence returning to direct, as well as the next installment of the Scream franchise with Kevin Williamson directing. Vanderbilt also is known for his screenplay Zodiac, which he wrote for David Fincher, as well as creating Netflix’s Murder Mystery franchise starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.

Vanderbilt is repped by WME and UFUSE Management.
