FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) — Just months ago, a parking deck stood on the corner of Tennessee Street in downtown Florence, but now, it’s gone.
Demolition began in April, and 179 days later, the demolition is complete.
“Today is when all the debris is supposed to be finishing up, it does look like they have another day or so of that” Florence Councilman Jackie Hendrix said.
The demolition comes after the council voted to remove it due to safety concerns, they found in December of last year.
“We definitely made the right decision tearing it down, I looked at it, it had a lot of major flaws it was becoming a dangerous structure so I’m glad we don’t have that liability anymore” Hendrix said.
News 19 asked Hendrix, what could possibly be put in this new open space, that’s located in the heart of downtown.
“Personally, I think it’s the be at solution for our city hall, but that’s a group decision, I represent one vote not 4, and it would take 4 to do that” Hendrix said. “If it doesn’t go that route, I’m a proponent of economic development, I’d rather see it developed some mix use, something that generates sale tax, so a lot of different directions that it could go”
Hendrix tells me that as soon as Ron Tyler takes the mayor seat officially on November 1, plans for this space will be one of the first things on the agenda.
