2024 was a significant step forward for Tampa Buccaneers cornerback Zyon McCollum, carving out a full-time role for himself for the first time in his career. And heading into 2025, McCollum has done enough to earn a long-term extension to stay in Tampa for the foreseeable future.
The Buccaneers pass defense as a whole was far from impressive last season, allowing the fourth most passing yards per game while also forcing the fourth-least number of interceptions for opposing quarterbacks.
However, McCollum was one of the few brights spots, leading the team in both interceptions (2) and passes deflected (17) on the year. This comes after starting just nine games in 2023 where he was far less impactful.

It seems as if McCollum’s breakout 2024 season was enough for the Buccaneers to ink McCollum to a long-term extension. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McCollum and the organization agreed to terms on a three-year, $48 million extension that will see McCollum receive $35.4 million in guaranteed money.

Expectations remain high for the Buccaneers as an organization heading into 2025 after reaching the postseason each of the last five seasons.
But if the Buccaneers are going to take the leap from being a borderline playoff team to a true contender in the NFC, the pass defense certainly need to take a significant step in the right direction.

Clearly, the Buccaneers view McCollum as a significant piece in doing just that, banking on even more improvements from a player who has consistently exceeded expectations after coming to the team as a fifth-round pick out Sam Houston State in the 2022 NFL Draft.
At least on paper, this decision seems like a wise one, as McCollum has consistently improved in the completion percentage allowed against him since his rookie season, a key metric in judging just how effective a cornerback is.
