‘Scrubs’: John C. McGinley To Reprise Dr. Cox Role On ABC Reboot

Paging Dr. Cox! Another beloved Scrubs character is set to return for ABC‘s upcoming reboot. John C. McGinley has joined the Scrubs followup as a recurring, reprising his fan favorite role as the acerbic Dr. Perry Cox from the original series.

He joins fellow Scrubs original cast members Zach Braff (J.D.), Donald Faison (Turk), Sarah Chalke (Elliot) and Judy Reyes (Carla), who all have closed deals for the reboot, which has a series order at ABC. It is probably likely that we will also see the last two remaining OGs, Ken Jenkins and Neil Flynn, reprising their characters of Bob Kelso and Janitor, respectively.

The reboot, from 20th Television, is executive produced by Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence, Braff, Faison and Chalke, with Scrubs alums Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra as showrunners and executive producers.

It follows JD Dorian (Braff) and Christopher Turk (Faison), who scrub in together for the first time in a long time — medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way.

One of those old characters is McGinley’s Perry Cox, the sarcastic attending physician and unwilling mentor to J.D. who becomes the chief of medicine at Sacred Heart Hospital before transitioning to being a professor when Sacred Heart is turned into a medical school.

Like Braff, McGinley has been a frequent Bill Lawrence collaborator. Following McGinley’s nine-season run on Scrubs, he was a series regular TBS comedy series Ground Floor, which Lawrence co-created and executive produced. McGinley is also part of the main cast of HBO’s upcoming untitled Steve Carell comedy series, co-created/exec produced by Lawrence, in which he also plays a college professor.

McGinley is repped by UTA and attorney Gregg Gellman at Yorn Levine Barnes.
