They take place in two different time periods but leave it to the NCIS writers to figure out a way to do a crossover.

In November, NCIS and NCIS: Origins will share a “decades-spanning mystery.” It begins on NCIS: Origins at 8 p.m. with the investigsation into the small-town death of a naval officers in the ’90s.

On NCIS, the case is unexpectably opened by the modern-day team.

This is the first time the shows have engaged in a crossover. NCIS: Origins, a prequel to NCIS, launched its freshman season last year. NCIS’ Wilmer Valderrama and Origins’ Austin Stowell (NCIS: Origins) revealed the news today in a promo.

NCIS: Origins will return on Oct. 14. The first season ended in a cliffhanger;  Lala (Mariel Molino) is seriously injured in a car accident after swerving to avoid a child.

“We definitely had a lot of discussions in the writers’ room about how we wanted to end the season,” Co-showrunner David J. North told Deadline last April. “I don’t know that I would necessarily say we always looked at it as how are we going to take out Cecilia? That’s an interesting way to put it. But we definitely had a lot of discussions about how we wanted to end the season. And at the end of the day, Gina and I like to tell stories that seem to be honest and true to us. I think everyone has had these experiences where you wake up one morning, and life’s ho-humming along and then all of a sudden something unthinkable happens. And lives are constantly colliding, and that was the theme of the beautiful finale that Gina wrote. In the end, this is sort of just where the story took us.”
