NEW MARKET, Ala. (WHNT) — The Buckhorn Bucks are off to a fast start in the David Green era.
The Bucks took down Athens 16-10 Friday night to advance to 2-0 on the season.
“I thought our guys played really hard, they played with a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of effort, and so it was a great team win,” Green said. “I thought they had a great week of practice, the kids were focused, so I’m very proud of them and how they handled themselves.”
Buckhorn blocked a punt for a touchdown and saw a massive performance from senior leader Moses Whitecotton, who had an interception, forced a fumble and two sacks to go along with 10 tackles.
He says the team’s success so far this season starts with the guys in the locker room.
“The way we prepare, I just feel like it’s different. The way we work in the weight room and how we talk to each other, I feel like it’s different than anybody else in the region,” Whitecotton said. “We just got to take that on to next week and every game we play.”
Green says that since he was hired, the team has practiced what he’s preached, and now the fruits of that labor are being shown in success on the field/
“These guys have really bought into the things we are trying to promote here, things we are trying to build here,” Green said. “These guys from April, when I got here to today, they’ve done everything they can to kind of continue to improve themselves as a team and as individuals.”
Going forward, the players have lofty goals.
“I want to win region, I think we can win region,” Whitecotton said.
Buckhorn opens region play against Gadsden City.
