A community is rallying around a Ventura County family after their 5-year-old son was killed in a tragic rockfall accident at Rincon Beach over the weekend.
The boy, identified by loved ones as Maxwell, was climbing on rocks with a friend at the popular beach on Sunday when one dislodged, causing another boulder to fall on top of him, according to a GoFundMe page set up on behalf of the family. The accident happened in front of his parents and friends.
Max suffered fatal injuries, and despite emergency response, he did not survive.
By Thursday morning, the fundraiser had collected more than $34,000 toward its $60,000 goal. The money will go toward funeral costs, grief counseling and other expenses as the family navigates their loss.
“Max lived and experienced more in his short 5 years of life than most children get in their lifetime,” the GoFundMe reads. “He got to live a life of adventure and exploring while building some of the fondest memories with his mom, dad, friends, and family.”
Organizers described Max as “an energetic spirit with a huge heart that brought so much joy,” and said his parents, Mikey and Chrissy, are “genuine people who always try to find the good inside of others.”
The family, who often spent time camping, exploring Ventura beaches, and visiting friends and relatives across California and Idaho, was said to have cherished time together rather than valuing material things.
The fundraiser was organized by close friends who said Mikey and Chrissy are not ones to ask for help but now need all the support they can get.
Max’s loved ones say he will be “immensely missed by all who knew him.”
