The Atlanta Braves announced Thursday that they released right-handed pitcher Cal Quantrill. The 30-year-old was claimed off waivers by the Braves on Aug. 21 from the Miami Marlins. He made just two starts with Atlanta before being released.

The Quantrill release came amid a major roster move. The Braves reinstated outfielder Jurickson Profar from the paternity list and recalled right-handed pitcher Daysbel Hernandez. Quantrill was released while infielder Luke Williams was designated for assignment.

The Braves also claimed right-handed pitcher Wander Suero off waivers from the New York Mets.

Quantrill began the 2025 season with the Marlins after joining them on a one-year, $3.5 million deal. He made 24 starts with Miami, going 4-10 with a 5.50 ERA with 82 strikeouts across 109.2 innings pitched.

Quantrill then joined Atlanta where he made two starts, going 0-2 with a 13.50 ERA. He allowed 12 earned runs over eight innings with just three strikeouts.

Quantrill will now head to free agency where he’ll look for his next home. The seven-year veteran will also look to get back to his old form when he was a dependable starter early in his career.

Cal Quantrill Career History

Quantrill was initially drafted by the San Diego Padres in the first round of the 2016 MLB Draft. He debuted in 2019 and spent part of the 2020 season with San Diego before getting shipped to Cleveland in a blockbuster nine-player trade. He dominated with Cleveland to finish out the 2020 season.

Quantrill enjoyed his best year as a pro in 2021, going 8-3 with a 2.89 ERA across 149.2 innings. He then pitched a career-high 186.1 innings in 2022, finishing with a 3.38 ERA.

The 2023 season proved to be the beginning of Quantrill’s downfall, as he finished with a 5.24 ERA across 19 starts. He joined the Colorado Rockies in 2024, where he had a 4.98 ERA over 29 starts. This year, across Miami and Atlanta, he has a 6.04 ERA over 117.2 innings.

Braves Already Looking Ahead to 2026

The Braves are already out of the playoff race, so it didn’t hurt them to take a chance on Quantrill. They did something similar with veteran shortstop Ha-Seong Kim, claiming him off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Braves took on a potential big financial commitment with Kim as he has a $16 million player option this offseason.
