LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), will be installing traffic camera poles in Limestone and Morgan Counties.

According to ALDOT, drivers should expect a nighttime lane closures on I-65 on Thursday, Sept. 4. Contractors will close a lane on I-65 northbound near milepost 346 and a westbound lane on SR-304/Huntsville Browns Ferry Road at I-65 Exit 347.

ALDOT told News 19 that the lane closure will last from 6:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The $2.5 million advanced corridor management project extends from Exit 334 at SR-67 in Priceville to Exit 354 at US-31 in Athens.

ALDOT said that contractors will install 84-foot-long concrete poles at four different sites this week. The poles will stand 70 feet above ground once installed.

Additionally, contractors will install two poles per night next week that will be going up along I-65 in Limestone County. You can see those dates and locations below:

  • Tuesday, Sept. 9, northbound at mileposts 349 and 353.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 10, southbound at mileposts 352 and 354.
  • Thursday, Sept. 11, near mileposts 343 and 344.

Overall, the project is set to add 11 cameras on I-65 once the poles are in place. ALDOT said that a camera will also be installed on an existing pole at Exit 340.

ALDOT North Region Traffic Systems Management and Operations Coordinator Phillip Day said the cameras will fill gaps in ALDOT’s existing traffic management system.

“They’ll significantly expand coverage,” Day said. “We will have cameras covering nearly the entirety of I-65 from Priceville to Athens.”

Th project also includes the Installation of two overhead dynamic message signs (DMS) — one will be northbound just north of the Tennessee River, and one southbound before Exit 347.

According to ALDOT, two Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) stations and a combination of radio devices and fiber optic cables for device communication will also be put into place.

Once the cameras are installed and become operational, they will undergo testing. After the testing period is completed, livestreams will become viewable by the public, which can be seen by clicking here.

“Cameras assist ALDOT with detection and monitoring roadway issues and congestion. This information allows the Department to more quickly coordinate with first responders for assistance with clearing highway incidents. ALDOT does not record or store footage from its traffic cameras,” said the Alabama Department of Transportation.
